Professor Hennie A. Lombaard is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist who has been in practice since 2007 and currently serves as Professor and Division Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Co-Director of the Placenta Accreta Care Team at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Throughout his career, Professor Lombaard has been committed to advancing multidisciplinary care for women with high-risk pregnancies and complex medical disorders. In 2005, he established a joint MFM-Diabetes Clinic with endocrinology at Kalafong Hospital, creating an integrated care model for pregnant women with diabetes. Following his appointment at the Texas Children’s Hospital Pavilion for Women and Baylor College of Medicine, he founded the first dedicated Maternal-Fetal Medicine-Nephrology Clinic in Texas, providing specialized care for pregnant women with chronic kidney disease, patients receiving dialysis, and transplant recipients. He also played a key role in developing collaborative MFM-Rheumatology and MFM-Neurology clinics, further expanding comprehensive care for women with complex medical conditions during pregnancy.
Professor Lombaard’s research interests include the maternal and placental microbiome, medical complications in pregnancy, and Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) disorders. His work increasingly focuses on the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the screening, diagnosis, and risk stratification of PAS. He has published extensively in the field of maternal-fetal medicine, with his scholarly contributions receiving more than 1,000 citations on Google Scholar.
A passionate advocate for women’s health, Professor Lombaard has dedicated his career to improving maternal outcomes and advancing understanding of the long-term impact of medical conditions on women’s health across the reproductive lifespan. His clinical, research, and leadership efforts continue to shape innovative models of care for high-risk obstetric patients both nationally and internationally.
