Midwife Specialist (RM, MSc, PhD)
Dr. Margreet Barnardt-Wibbelink is a dedicated midwife and advocate for women-centered, midwife-led care in South Africa. After gaining experience in the Netherlands’ well-established midwifery-led model, she moved to South Africa where she recognized the country’s unique challenges. This inspired her to establish the Healthy Mom and Baby Clinicin 2009, a non-profit organization providing professional, private care to vulnerable women. During this time, she also ran her own private practice as an independent midwife.
Margreet obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery from Artevelde Hogeschool in Belgium in 2002. She continued her education at Nelson Mandela University (NMU), earning a BCur Honours in Advanced Midwifery & Neonatal Nursing Science (2012), a Master’s (2014), and a PhD (2019) focused on scaling up clinical midwifery practices in South Africa. She is currently a professional associate at NMU.
Identified as a worthy successor by the founder of the Sister Lilian Centre, Margreet underwent extensive mentoring before becoming the General Manager of the Sister Lilian Centre and Sensitive Midwifery in 2019. In this role, she champions the midwifery profession on a national and international level, advocating for all pregnant women, babies, and families. She also directs the Sensitive Midwifery Online Academy, where she actively mentors midwives in their professional and personal development.
